The UAE celebrated a historic milestone in its rail network today. Etihad Rail's first passenger train departed Fujairah at 5.34am. The journey covered Fujairah to Abu Dhabi in roughly 105 minutes. Officials welcomed passengers with traditional Emirati dance and Arabic coffee. The train reached Abu Dhabi station seven minutes ahead of schedule.
A morning of firsts at Fujairah station
Passengers began arriving 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time. Many travelers carried cameras to capture the historic moment. Staff served complimentary breakfast and sweets once boarding began. The mood stayed festive as families and commuters settled into their seats. One passenger occupied Carriage 1, Seat 1, marking a symbolic first. The ride offered scenic views, including a pass near Dubai World Central.
Jubilant scenes as the train reaches Abu Dhabi
Crowds gathered at Abu Dhabi station to greet the arriving train. Passengers stepped off smiling, many calling the ride smooth and comfortable. The early arrival added extra excitement to an already historic day. Staff guided travelers through the new station with clear signage and instructions. A second train later departed from Abu Dhabi back toward Fujairah. This return service showed the network now runs in both directions.
A five year journey to launch day
Etihad Rail spent five years building toward this passenger launch. The project links key UAE cities through a modern rail network. Officials say more stations will open as the network expands further. The service aims to ease road traffic and cut travel times nationwide. Many residents now plan to use the train for daily commutes. Reports noted commuters riding the new service straight to work today. The launch marks a major step in the UAE's transport ambitions.
